While the wars in Ukraine and Gaza continue to dominate global headlines, a devastating conflict has been unfolding largely unnoticed in Sudan since April 2023. In the shadow of these better-publicized crises, civilians in Sudan bear the brunt of violence that has forced over 12 million people to flee their homes, according to UN estimates.

In South Sudan’s capital, Juba, torrential rains have flooded refugee camp areas, destroying makeshift shelters, washing away latrines, and turning the ground into vast pools of mud. Among these camps, Protection of Civilians Camp 3—originally established during an earlier phase of conflict—has evolved into a long-term settlement. Despite dire conditions, life persists: informal cinemas operate, trade continues, and over 30 primary and secondary schools provide education to thousands of displaced children.

For many families, the decision to remain in the camp is strategic: education is more accessible and affordable there than in the city. In the midst of displacement and uncertainty, the camp has become a fragile space of continuity and resilience.
