The war in Sudan is the largest displacement crisis in the world – and one of the least talked about.
In the shadow of the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, and largely outside the attention of the world’s media, a war has been raging in Sudan since April 2023, with civilians bearing the brunt of the violence. The conflict has caused one of the world’s largest displacement crises, forcing millions of people to flee to neighboring countries, including Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
Protection of Civilians Camp 3, on the outskirts of Juba, the capital of South Sudan, was established several years earlier to provide shelter for people fleeing an earlier wave of conflict. Today, the camp features cinemas, thriving trade, and, above all, more than 30 primary and secondary schools.They are cheaper than schools in the city, so poorer South Sudanese families also often choose to move into the camp alongside refugees in order to provide their children with an education. The camp is overcrowded and unprepared to receive another wave of refugees.
